5th Workshop „Waste and New Materialism“

📅 April 9–11, 2025 | 📍 ISOE – Institute for Social-Ecological Research, Frankfurt am Main

The 5th workshop of the DFG-funded network Waste in Motion, organized by Kathrin Eitel and Johanna Kramm, will take place from April 9 to 11, 2025, at the Institute for Social-Ecological Research (ISOE) in Frankfurt am Main. The workshop is structured in two parts:

🔹 Part 1 (April 9–10): Discussion of Book Contributions
The first part focuses on contributions for the forthcoming Handbook on Waste Studies (Transcript Verlag). In various review sessions, participants will collaboratively discuss and further develop key chapter drafts. Topics include discard studies, waste infrastructures, decomposition processes, speculative waste futures, pollutants, and care in the context of waste.

🔹 Part 2 (April 10–11): Waste & New Materialism
The second part shifts attention to theoretical engagement with New Materialism and its intersections with waste. In addition to an introductory session on the topic, the keynote by Thomas Lemke (“The Government of Things“) will be a central highlight. Interactive formats such as a World Café will provide space for discussions on key concepts of New Materialism, particularly in relation to materialization, knowledge, care, and motion. The workshop will conclude with an excursion to a wastewater treatment facility.
